When paying your taxes all at once is not possible
An IRS payment plan lets an eligible taxpayer pay an outstanding balance over time. Before requesting an arrangement, look at what you owe and the payment you can sustain.

A monthly payment should fit your finances
Prepare a realistic picture of your income, essential expenses, and other obligations. A payment that looks manageable today also needs to work in months when income is lower or an important expense comes due.
Understand what a payment plan does
A plan is an agreement to pay over an extended period. It does not automatically forgive debt. Interest and applicable penalties can continue while the balance remains unpaid, and setup fees may apply. Eligibility and available terms depend on the account and the method of application.

Questions to ask before applying
- Is the balance current, and which tax years does it include?
- Are all required returns filed?
- What monthly amount can I maintain alongside essential expenses?
- What fees and ongoing charges should I expect?
- What should I do if my finances change after the plan begins?
If an existing plan has become difficult
Mention a missed payment or change in income during the call. Ask what options can be reviewed and what account information is needed. Keep payment confirmations and recent notices available.
