Tax liens and levies require prompt attention
A lien and a levy are different collection actions. Keep the IRS notice, identify its response date, and explain any bank, wage, or property concern when you call.

Lien and levy are not the same
A federal tax lien is a legal claim against property after a taxpayer fails to pay a tax debt. A levy is an action that takes property or rights to property to satisfy the debt. The notice and account facts determine what applies.
Do not ignore a collection notice
Read the entire notice and keep the envelope or delivery record when a deadline matters. Ask what response or appeal instructions are included and whether a payment or hardship discussion is relevant.
Prepare the account facts
- Tax years and balance shown
- Notice or levy date
- Employer, bank, or property information involved
- Payments or arrangements already attempted
Get help understanding the next step
A conversation can organize the question and identify possible payment or collection options, but it does not stop an IRS action automatically. Follow the notice instructions and ask what work is actually proposed.
