Help with past-due tax returns
A missing return can create penalties, notices, and an estimated balance. Identify the years involved and gather the records you have, even if you cannot pay the full balance today.

List the years first
Use IRS correspondence, prior returns, and personal records to identify which years may be missing. Do not assume an old draft or extension proves that a return was filed.
Gather income information
W-2s, 1099s, business records, interest statements, and other income documents may be relevant. If a record is missing, ask how to request a replacement or transcript.
Filing and payment are related but separate
Filing a past-due return may clarify the tax owed, but it does not automatically eliminate a balance. Discuss payment options separately and explain what you can pay.
Keep proof of submission
Save a copy of the completed return and any e-file acceptance, mailing receipt, or IRS correspondence. Ask who is responsible for each submission and follow-up.
