Use the right IRS record for the question
A tax transcript and an account review answer different questions. Identify the tax year and the issue first, then ask which record may help explain the balance, filing, or payment history.

Common record questions
A return transcript may show information from a filed return. An account transcript can show transactions such as assessments, payments, and adjustments. A wage and income transcript may help locate reported income.
Compare records carefully
Check the tax year, taxpayer name, and document date. A transcript is not always a complete copy of a return and may not show every record needed for a response.
Ask what the review is meant to answer
- Why does the account show a balance?
- Was a payment applied to the right year?
- Was a return filed or adjusted?
- What document supports a response to the notice?
Keep a simple evidence file
Save the transcript request, downloaded record, IRS letter, payment confirmation, and notes about any differences. A clear file helps separate a filing question from a payment question.
